Preparing for Surgery is Hard Work (Prehabilitation)
At Nij Smellinghe, we strive to provide excellent care for patients around the time of surgery or hospitalisation. We achieve this through continuous innovation and research, which help us optimise our care and surrounding processes. We understand that a hospital stay is a significant event that impacts both physically and mentally. Therefore, we have developed a unique approach aimed at optimising the fitness of our patients, both before, during, and after surgery and hospitalisation. This helps prevent complications and focuses on ensuring that patients can fully participate in their own home and living environment.
Preparation: Prehabilitation for a Successful Recovery
An important part of our care for patients undergoing surgery is the concept of prehabilitation. This is a personalised programme designed to help patients enter surgery and their hospital stay in the best possible physical condition. It includes physical training, nutritional advice, support for quitting smoking or drinking, and mental support. We work closely with the patient to create a plan tailored to their specific needs and capabilities. This preparation contributes to a faster and better recovery after surgery and hospitalisation.
During the Hospital Stay: Active Involvement and Support
We aim to keep patients not only physically but also mentally active during their hospital stay. We know that a passive attitude often results in a slower recovery. Therefore, we have introduced various initiatives to encourage patients to stay active. This starts right from admission: patients are encouraged to do as much as possible on their own, supported by our healthcare professionals. A great example of this is that our patients walk to the operating room whenever possible, instead of being transported in bed.
On our nursing wards, we ensure that patients spend less time in bed, actively promoting their recovery. For example, we offer movement programmes that help patients stay both physically and mentally active. Additionally, patients and their caregivers receive comprehensive information and guidance that helps them take control of their own recovery process. This means we are always looking for ways to better inform patients about their hospital stay and surgery.
Innovative Care and Research

What sets us apart is our focus on innovation and research in this area. We are involved in several research projects aimed at improving care around surgeries and related hospital stays. One example is our research into improving patient fitness through prehabilitation. We are investigating how we can enhance patients’ fitness through physical and mental training and nutrition. This not only aids in better recovery but also helps prevent complications and setbacks.
The Future: Patient-Centred Care
Our vision for the future is clear: we want all our patients to enter and leave surgery and hospitalisation as fit as possible. This requires a shift in how we view health and care. At Nij Smellinghe, we believe in patient-centred care, where health goals and the patient’s experience are central. This means we are not only focused on curing disease, but also on promoting the overall health and well-being of our patients. We work closely with patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers to realise this vision. This requires a broad approach, looking at the entire context of the patient, including their social and physical environment. Through this approach, we contribute to more healthy years of life and an improved quality of life for our patients.
Summary
We stand for personal care, innovation, and quality. Our comprehensive approach ensures that patients not only recover better, but also emerge stronger from their surgery and hospitalisation. With prehabilitation, active involvement during the hospitalisation/treatment, and continuous innovation in our care practices, we offer our patients the best possible chances for a quick and successful recovery. We believe that this approach contributes to the chance of ageing healthily, and we are committed to promoting and improving this vision further.
